Crispy, Crunchy, tangy, hot and sweet flavors combine to make Bread Chaat delicious to eat as a snack or a great alternative to a meal.This snack is not just delicious, it is also fun to make and eat!!
Ingredients
Bread pieces (1 " cubes) - as needed (You can use any variety of bread)
Peas - 1/2 cup
(You can use white peas, chik peas, black channa, green peas or yellow peas)
Yogurt (Curd) - 1/2 cup
Tamarind Chutney - as needed
Green Chutney - as needed
Roasted Cumin Powder - to sprinkle (app. 1/2 tsp)
Red Chilly Powder - to sprinkle (app. 1/4 tsp)
Chaat masala - to sprinkle (app. 1/2 tsp)
Boiled Potato - 1 (chopped)
Onions - handful (finely chopped)
Tomato - handful (chopped)
Cilantro - 2 tblsp (finely chopped)
Sev and/or Bhoondhi - 1/2 cup
Preparation Steps1. Pressure cook the peas with some turmeric powder, salt, chilly powder, garam masala and some tamarind juice. You can also cook this using a slow cooker or using a normal vessel on stove top. You need soft peas along with a semi thick gravy. This gravy is called Ragda and can be used over potato pattice, samosa chaat, with batura etc.
2.The bread pieces should be crispy for the chaat to taste good. So put the pieces in the oven or toast the bread before making the chaat. You could also use old bread or store bought croutons to make this chaat.
3. Chop the onions, tomatoes, cilantro and potato and keep it ready.
4. Beat the yogurt with little salt and little sugar.
5. Prepare the green chutney and tamarind chutney.
Method1. Arrange few pieces of bread in a serving dish.
2. Pour some boiled peas along with the gravy (ragda) over the top.
3. Top it with some boiled potato cubes chopped onions, tomatoes and cilantro.
4. Pour little tamarind chutney and green chutney.
5. Pour the beaten yogurt over that.
6. Sprinkle some red chilly powder, cumin powder and chaat masala over the yogurt.
7. Finally sprinkle sev and/or boondhi on top and serve immediately. Serve this as an appetizer or as an evening snack.
“Chaat” – an assorted savory snacks typically served at every road side tracks from big outlets to small carts in India, Pakistan and rest of South Asia. Initially, Chaats were known as the street food in cities like Mumbai, Hyderabad, Delhi and few North Indian States but now has found a place in the upscale Indian restaurants, weddings and occasions.
The original Chaat is a mixture of potato pieces, crispy fried bread, gram bean and spices. Other popular Chaat varieties include the Aloo ki Tikkis (mashed potatoes garnished with onion, coriander, hot spices and dash of curd), Bhel puri, Dahi puri, Pani puri, Dahi vada, Papdi Chaat, Fruit chaat and Sev puri. The common elements for preparing the Chaats are Yoghurt or dahi, chopped onion, coriander, sev (small dried yellow noodles) and Chaat masala.
